OYO were approached to collaborate on a PPS development in Dendermonde’s city centre. The project would provide residential, commercial and public spaces, but a central challenge involved designing a structure that wouldn’t contribute to the city’s ongoing battle with congestion on its main street… We had to ask ourselves, how could we create a new landmark space that was useful to residents, without further burdening the city’s infrastructure?
This private residence is conceived as a place without boundaries: the garden is the living room, the small lake the bathroom. Nature thrives in this low budget home that sticks perfectly to the basic idea of living, functioning very open minded. Every room in this house is connected and ready to absorb the creativity of its residents.
The Skogfinsk Museum in Svullrya, Norway, is a celebration of the traditions and culture of the Skogfinner people, or Forest Finns, a minority local to the area. We wanted to create a contemporary structure both reflective of the traditions of this culture and respective of the natural environment surrounding the museum.
When considering where to position a new sports hall in Ledeberg, we asked ourselves how could we maximise the use of space in such a densely populated part of the city? How could we create a sports hall without encroaching on (much needed) parking and green spaces that existed in the neighbourhood? These questions led us to a solution designed to turn wasteland beneath a highway into a vision for youth sport, whilst also enabling the creation of a general sports hall that wouldn’t encroach on parking space.
The house is designed as compact as possible and maximises the use of outside space as one room more of the house. Living room and kitchen blend with the outside cover space, bringing the living areas outside.
The design is based on the learning environment of the future. The building aspires to bring people together and act as a catalyst for change and development by opening up towards its surroundings with respect for future developments and the current identity of an ever-evolving campus.
Our proposal to transform a former heritage brewery into secondary school includes clever use of the existing potentially rich space.
The starting point for the new school was to create a compact volume that has the ability to become the new heart, not only for the existing fragmented school, but for the entire area.
In the realm of industry, we embark on a regenerative journey. OYO won the competition to design the Service Center for Elia in the port of Ostend, contributing to revolutionize together with one of Europe's largest electricity system operators.
In 2018, OYO emerged as the winners of a competition to reimaginee the town hall of Jabbeke, a town nestled in the region of West Flanders, Belgium. The original structure, deeply rooted in tradition, serving its conventional functions. However, as we embarked on this transformative project, with a question in mind: What does a town hall represent in the present day and how can it become a vibrant hub for public engagement and social cohesion? Our exploration led us to craft spaces that that fosters warmth, social inclusivity, and connects the two main town’s public spaces.
Valencia Innovation Bay is the gateway to everything that is happening in La Marina de Valencia. We proposed the transformation of the former port building into a multifunctional co-working hub.
Within a co-creative process, OYO designed a proposal for the adaptive transformation of a firestation building into a library for Londerzeel.
The SoLi House starts from a transformation of an existing semi-attached house from the 1960s, characterized by a classic Flemish context with 2 floors, and pitched roofs. The design process focused on addressing the context and optimizing the use of three free facades maximizing the relation with the dunes.
Before OYO was invited to pitch for this project, the ‘park’ did not exist - it was a site with most of the sporting areas completely closed off to the public. We thought about how we could redesign the site to engage a wider variety of groups with sport and exercise, from spectators to clubs to casual play and fitness. This would involve creating an open park, with three buildings - gym hall, soccer building and hockey club – all refurbished, open and connected to each other.
We create imaginative solutions that are accessible and engaging on widely varying scales.
The majority of car purchases now happen online. We approached the competition to design this car showroom by asking the question: what would a physical showroom of the future look like? Could it do more than invite people to see and buy cars? What if it could become a hub for innovation, knowledge and spectacle?
